Continental Ponds News

We are excited to be hosting our first Build-A-Pondless Waterfall event for 2007 on March 31st at Minick Materials . If you are someone who not only dreams of a better outdoor living space but also likes to dig-in to do it, now you can - literally! We will give you all the information and guidance you need to install your own water feature. In one day you will transform an area into a living ecosystem - you will help to excavate the space, place all the liners and rock, install the skimmer and filters, then watch it fill up and come to life. So be prepared to get dirty - bring a pair of gloves and a shovel and learn from the water garden experts who will be on hand to give you an affordable and comprehensive training in water feature installation.

Green is in!

If you haven't heard, Global Warming is real. No longer a theory or topic for debate, we are feeling its very real effects through the intensity of droughts and heat waves, thunderstorms and hurricanes, and the loss of wildlife due to their changing habitats and ecosystems. There is now a new movement in becoming more eco-friendly through conservation, recycling, and the use of appliances and vehicles that reduce energy usage. But if you want to do something in your own backyard, check out the Backyard Ecotopia. The four themes of the Backyard Ecotopia are energy conservation through smart landscaping and products, attracting desirable wildlife by creating habitat with the right plant material, water conservation with permeable paving and water retention features, and recycling of household waste through composting, as a way to increase soil fertility and increase plant health, as well as a means to reduce waste going to a landfill site. You can be sure it is coming to a backyard near you in the not too distant future - maybe even yours!

Green attracts...

Perhaps you noticed that once you added your water feature to your property, that you weren't the only one attracted to it. Sure friends, family, and neighbors all find excuses to come over and visit your finny friends or hear the tranquil sounds of your waterfall and stream, but have you noticed the other visitors? Naturally some of the local wildlife found out that you have the new hot spot in town, but maybe you want some more company. There are plenty of plants that you can put in and around your water feature to help attract everything from frogs to birds to dragonflies and other beneficial insects. Check out this month's issue of Aquascape Lifestyles for great articles and tips on attracting wildlife to your backyard habitat as well as pond and fish care.
