What's Happening at Continental Ponds

During the month of June (a.k.a. Flood Month), we have been able to wade through and complete several projects. While the rain has caused delays, extra work, and even some extra worries, we have been able to stay busy and are getting geared up for our Night Water Garden Tour on August 4th. Whether you are on the tour or just planning on having private showings of your water feature to friends and family, we are committed to keeping your outdoor escape looking its best! So this month we have some tips for your pond and we are always available to answer your questions – just drop us a note!

In Your Pond

Now that Summer has arrived there are several things for you to do in and around your pond. As the nights get warmer and water temperatures continue to climb, your plants should really start to flourish. Adding fertilizer this month will help produce better looking plants, longer blooming periods and establish a healthier root system. To help maintain plants, prune back all the spent stems/stalks, in and around the pond.

Now is also the time to start adding those tropical plants we have all been waiting for. Night blooming lilies are always a favorite, not to mention black taro and various other flowering beauties. Call or e-mail us to get your favorites!

Due to all the rainfall we have been getting a lot of calls about flooding ponds and dirt getting in. As always we suggest letting Mother Nature take its toll. There is no need to do another clean out; you have spent time/money on getting those bacteria colonies formed. Just continue to add your beneficial bacteria; everything will be fine once all the rain stops.

July Special

During the month of July Continental Ponds will be running a SPECIAL on underwater lights. Lights originally priced at $49.98 will be on sale for $30.00. These are 20-watt submersible lights; price does not include transformer or installation. If you are interested in putting your pond on our Night Pond Tour we will give you an additional discount. Our Tour will be held Aug. 4th from 9 PM until 11PM. Tickets will be $5.00 and all proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Wildlife Federation and their Ponds For Kids Program. Please contact us for additional information.

Sustainable Solutions for Summer Pests

Summer is in full swing! If you are enjoying quiet nights by the pond, you may not be enjoying some of the extra company – pesky pests! If you feel like you are spending more time swatting away mosquitos or worrying that some of your pricey landscaping is getting munched away, there are some environmentally friendly ways to deal with these problems.

Of course, your water feature probably already contains some elements such as fish and dragonflies that enjoy a treat of mosquito larvae. There are other beneficial insects that can be helpful such as lady bugs and praying mantis. You can also add companion plantings to your garden such as onion, radish, and garlic to help ward off some of your unwanted guests. A couple of good resources for natural solutions in your garden are Home Harvest Garden Supply and Planet Natural. In addition to information and products for pest control, they offer a variety of products that contribute to a sustainable environment.

There are a few simple things you can do around your outdoor retreat to make it more enjoyable such as maintaining the lawn and keeping grass mowed short, get rid of debris and brush piles, don't provide feeders and food sources for wildlife, and of course your presence (and even your dog's) can help keep away unwanted wildlife!
